Preschool Graduation... kind of...

After 8 years, all 3 kids have gone through St Andrews UMC Preschool.  Reagan has graduated from the 4's class - a little early b/c of our vacation.

I will always hold SAUMC very close to my heart for the experience Connor, Brenden & Reagan had while there.   I was so lucky to stumble upon it, shortly after we moved back to NC from Pennsylvania in the summer of 2004.  We had seen several drs about Connor and his "red flags," and one thing they all recommended was more socialization, like a preschool program.  Being a new mom, I had no idea how early the sign ups start for preschools & daycare.  Almost every place I called about was full, since we were well into late summer.  But then fate stepped in & when I called SAUMC preschool, I spoke with a wonderful Director who said, we don't know much about Autism, but we're willing to learn.  It was a bit of a drive, but I wanted to give it a try.  There, Connor started school in their toddler room and each year grew & blossomed through their patience & love.  I was so nervous when he graduated into the 3's class, where he was beginning to show greater differences to the typical children.  But the staff reassured me that  he could stay, and that his shadow (Ron's sister Angi) could come to school with him as a teacher's assistant.  That continued into the 4's class, where she also stayed on as his shadow/ assistant teacher.  The things he learned from being mainstreamed in with typical peers is immeasurable.  I'm so grateful to the school for that experience.
